INCHEON — The 17th Asian Games officially opened in Incheon tonight (Sept 19) with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium as hosts South Korea welcomed the Games’ return after 12 years.

With the theme Meet the bright future of Asia, the opening event saw performers — including popular Korean actors and singers — entertaining the 60,000-strong crowd with a show of traditional art, song and dance, while highlighting the many attractions and culture of the region’s 45 countries.

The parade of nations was given a unique Korean twist, with countries lined up in order of the Korean alphabet, as Team Singapore’s athletes made their appearance in the stadium in 18th spot led by sprinter and flagbearer Gary Yeo.

Singapore will be represented by 224 athletes across 20 sports, with the Asian Games — the biggest major multi-sport Games in terms of numbers and events — expected to feature more than 10,000 athletes competing across 36 sports.

South Korea last staged the Asian Games in Busan in 2002.
