SINGAPORE – Singapore will field a team of 12 players at the first-ever South-east Asian (SEA) Junior Tournament which starts today at the Kallang Tennis Centre.

A total of 16 teams from six countries around the region will compete over the next six days, with the final taking place this Sunday (Oct 26).

Co-organised by the Sport Singapore and the Singapore Tennis Association (STA), the event will see six teams in the Under-12 category, with five teams each in the Under-14 and Under-16 category.

Each team comprises four players (two boys and two girls) and the players will play in a round-robin format, with each country playing one tie – boy’s singles, girl’s singles and mixed doubles – each day.

The top team in each group – U12, U14 and U16 – after the round robin will be crowned champions.

Held alongside the ongoing BNP Paribas WTA Finals, the SEA Junior Tournament provides a platform for junior tennis players to pit their skills against their regional counterparts.

Local players Ashley Yim and Nicole Tan – who played in the WTA Future Stars tournament last week – are set to feature in the Under-14 and Under-16 girls’ category.

Speaking to TODAY, STA’s general manager Gregory Tan said: “This is the first time such a tournament is held and we hope to continue this for the next five years. The aim is to attract the top SEA junior tennis players to compete and learn from one another.”

Play starts at 9am today with the girl’s singles matches with Singapore facing Malaysia (U12), Indonesia (U14), and Vietnam (U16). EMMANUEL PHUA
