SINGAPORE — The total sponsorship secured for next month’s South-east Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore has crossed the S$70 million mark, with Japanese machinery manufacturer Kubota the latest to come on board.

The company, headquartered in Osaka, has pledged a S$1 million cash sponsorship for the biennial meet.

The agreement, announced today (May 8) by the Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee (SINGSOC), also brings to 70 the total number of sponsors for the 28th SEA Games, which will be held from June 5 to 16.

Local telco Singtel’s sponsorship last June in the form of multimedia solutions and technological infrastructure worth more than S$15 million is the biggest amount from a single sponsor so far.

“The SEA Games represents a unique opportunity for 11 nations to come together ... and corporates see the value in leveraging the Games to connect with their customers across the region,” said SINGSOC chairman Lim Teck Yin. “It is heartening to see friends from even outside South-east Asia come forward to support the 28th SEA Games.”

Yoshihisa Hosotani, general manager of corporate communications at Kubota, said the “heritage of the SEA Games” and the fact that it “attracts the attention of over 600 million people” makes it an attractive platform for sponsorship.

More sponsorship announcements of both foreign and local firms for next month’s SEA Games are expected to be announced in the next two weeks.

SINGSOC estimates the 2015 SEA Games will cost S$324.5 million to host, and had set a sponsorship target of S$50 million.
