SANIT-DENIS (FRANCE) — Vicente del Bosque (picture) has left his future as Spain coach open after the two-time reigning champions were sent crashing out of the European Championships by Italy.

The 65-year-old had previously suggested that he would not continue after the tournament. But at the post-match press conference, he said that he will first talk to Spanish federation chief Angel Maria Villar Llona.

“I didn’t say yes or no,” he said. “He is the one who brought me here. We will see what’s best for Spanish football.”

Del Bosque also did not think that an era had ended for Spanish football, even though Spain’s famous passing game lacked the final punch at the tournament, as they had at the 2014 World Cup finals.

“I don’t think an era has finished. Spanish football has a great structure, good youth academies and good players. We have our style and can keep going for many years,” said Del Bosque.

He did readily admit, however, that Spain were not good enough on Monday at the Stade de France. “We were a bit timid in the first half, without confidence and determination. It was better in the second half but we couldn’t equalise,” he said.

Spain and Italy will be meeting again soon in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, starting in September.

“Well, we are out of the Euros, we had hoped to go further. Now we have to start preparing for the World Cup qualifiers. It never ends,” said Del Bosque.” DPA
