Zac Leow wins first athletics medal for Singapore

SINGAPORE — Middle-distance runner Zac Leow finally broke the duck for Team Singapore’s athletics contingent last night, winning a silver in the men’s 1,500m T37 final, and the Republic’s first medal in the sport at the ASEAN Para Games (APG).

SINGAPORE — Middle-distance runner Zac Leow finally broke the duck for Team Singapore’s athletics contingent last night, winning a silver in the men’s 1,500m T37 final, and the Republic’s first medal in the sport at the ASEAN Para Games (APG).

He clocked 5min 44.49s to finish ahead of Vietnam’s Nguyen Huu Thinh (6:12.51) in front of a cheering home crowd at the National Stadium. Indonesian’s defending champion, Timin, won the gold in a new Games record time of 5:24.62.

Leow, 29, who is pursuing a PhD in sports science at the University of Western Australia, and is based in Perth, was delighted with his achievement. “I was very happy after crossing the finish line as I knew that it was the first medal for athletics,” said Leow, who will run the 400m T37 today.

“But I was a little sad because I really wanted to win the gold and hear the national anthem played.

“There were a lot of supporters today and I could hear them every single lap and I wanted to give them a proud moment.”
