Fujifilm unveils X-M1 ILC

SINGAPORE — Fujifilm today announced the birth of its third premium interchangeable lens camera, the Fujifilm X-M1.

SINGAPORE — Fujifilm today announced the birth of its third premium interchangeable lens camera, the Fujifilm X-M1.

The compact camera boasts a 16.3 megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor, the same one you would find in its X-Pro 1 and X-E1 cameras. The large sensor ensures you get picture quality that is comparable to full-frame sensors, said Fujifilm. In comparative stills of a night scene taken with the Nikon D7100, Sony NEX-5R, Canon EOS M and 5D MKIII, the X-M1 produced a photograph that offers greater detail, contrast, colour and sharpness over the Canon 5D MKIII and Nikon D7100. Only the image taken on the Canon EOS M was clearer, sharper and had more details. The shot taken with Sony’s NEX-5R was comparable to Fujifilm’s. I was not able to get the settings at which the photos were taken.

The camera is also very handy with a weight of only 330g (body-only). Two command dials on the top of the unit, places aperture and shutter speed controls within reach of your right thumb.

In a brief test, the flash performed admirably, producing shots that were not washed out yet illuminated the subject amply.

The camera doesn’t come with an optical viewfinder nor does it provide the option for it. It does have a 3-inch tiltable LCD panel (non-touch) that it says offers shutterbugs with options of shooting from overhead as well as ground level angles.

Other features on the X-M1 include wireless image transfer, which lets you share pictures on social networks, or to your smartphones or tablets. A host of creative filters adds dimension to an otherwise dreary picture should you feel like sharing your world. The camera is also capable of shooting videos in full HD (1920 x 1080) at 30 frames per second.

Available in Black, Brown and Silver, the Fujifilm X-M1 will be in stores from mid this month and retail from S$1,099 (body only).

In conjunction with today’s unveiling, Fujifilm also showed its lightweight XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS zoom lens. This lens will be offered to the X-M1 as a kit lens at a retail price of S$1,299, which will include a 16GB SD card and jacket case.
