Twitter the fastest growing platform as active user base grew by 40 per cent last year

SINGAPORE — Microblogging site Twitter may be the fastest growing social media network on the planet, but Facebook is still No 1 when it comes to active users, according to data compiled by Singapore-based social media agency, We Are Social.

With over a billion Internet users around Asia, social networking sites have been showing a positive growth as users continue adding to its figures in millions.

Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter are just a few of the social networking platforms that continue capturing significant figures with an impressive user base. While Twitter was touted the fastest growing global social platform — with a 40 per cent surge in users from Q2 to Q4 2012 — Facebook still maintains its position as the world’s number one social platform by active users, according to a report by GlobalWebIndex.

As of this month, the social network registered 1.184 billion active users, with more than 10 million new people in Asia joining it every month. Chinese instant messaging software QQ took second place, reigning in about 816 million active users, ahead of China-based social networking website Qzone (632 million active users).

Other popular platforms that made the list were WhatsApp (400 million active users), Google+ (300 million) and LinkedIn (259 million). Twitter could only secure eighth place, with 232 million active users, followed by Tumblr (230 million) and Twitter’s Chinese counterpart, Weibo (220 million).

There is also a massive shift in the medium people use to consume social media, with global mobile subscribers standing at 4.4 billion as of last year. It still continues to grow, adding hundreds of millions of new subscriptions every quarter of the year. Mobile penetration are at healthy levels, with levels exceeding a hundred per cent in several developed countries. About 1.5 billion people in the world can access the Internet with their mobile devices, with 80 per cent of time spent using apps.
