SINGAPORE — Apple and IBM today (Dec 10) announced the launch of the first group of apps geared towards enterprises, borne out of their partnership.

The first round of 10 apps are expected to “bring IBM’s big data and analytics capabilities to iPhone and iPad users in the enterprise,” according to IBM, and include a mixture of applications aimed at financial institutions, the banking and retail sectors and government agencies among others.

Called IBM MobileFirst, the iOS solutions are designed to strengthen the role of the iPhone and iPad for use in large-scale business applications.

According to IBM, the apps can be customised for any organisation and easily deployed, managed and upgraded via cloud services from IBM – that are specifically for iOs devices. This ensures security across the data, app and device.

At the moment, the apps are clearly focused on specific industries, though IBM says additional apps are continuously being designed and developed.

Here are some options from the first suite of IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions.

Travel and transportation:

‘Plan Flight’ addresses airlines’ major expense, fuel, by allowing pilots to make informed decisions about discretionary fuel. They can do this by viewing flight schedules, plans and crew manifests ahead of time and can even report issues while in-flight to ground crews. ‘Passenger+’ on the other hand, empowers flight crews to offer personalised services to passengers in-flight in the form of special offers, re-booking and baggage information.

Retail:

‘Sales Assist’ allows sales associates to connect with customer profile databases and make suggestions based on previous purchases and current selections. It will also allow them to check inventory, locate items in-store and even ship out-of-store items. ‘Pick & Pack’ revolutionises order fulfilments by combining proximity-based technology with back-end inventory systems.
