SINGAPORE — Smartphone cameras are great up to a point. But if you want to move past food shots and washed-out birthday pictures, you need to whip out that handy point-and-shoot camera.

The Samsung NX2000 SMART CAMERA is a simple-to-use camera that has a few tricks up its sleeve to handle more complicated shots, such as low-light conditions and getting everyone to look their best in a group photo.

It has a 20.3 megapixel ASP-C CMOS Sensor that delivers sharp and highly-detailed images as promised, and a DRIMe IV engine which reduces noise, improves speed and creates vivid colour reproduction. With up to eight frames per second on continuous shooting mode, and 1/4000th of a second top shutter speed, you should be able to catch most action shots.

The camera does not come with an electronic viewfinder, but most people are no strangers to shooting at arm’s length anyway. It also does not have a built-in flash, and bundles an external SEF8A flash that slots into the Smart Shoe on the top of the camera.

The camera offers a choice of 12 interchangeable lenses with the built-in i-Function to control aperture, shutter speed and other functions right from the lens. The large 3.7-inch WVGA full touchscreen lets you frame shots and access the controls of the camera, such as switching between shutter or aperture-priority settings — to put control at your fingertips — and preset scene selection to let the camera pick the best settings while you focus on framing that perfect shot. You can also use the touchscreen to focus and snap a picture when you have framed it.

Once you have taken your shots, transferring them to other devices is a snap. Connectivity is provided through Wi-Fi, while the Smart Camera app, available for Android and iOS devices, provides a link to sharing images between devices.

Sharing on social network services such as Facebook is as simple as selecting your pictures and pushing them online.

I felt the weight distribution between the 119mm x 64,5mm x 21.9mm body and the lens a little off, with the lens weighing more in my hands than I was comfortable with. And limiting storage to a microSD is an unnecessary inconvenience when you want to swap out cards between different cameras. But if you want a camera that takes the guesswork out of your picture perfect moment, this could be it.

The Samsung NX2000 SMART CAMERA is available in black, white and pink at S$849.
