SINGAPORE — In a radical departure from its previous offerings, Samsung has unveiled a full metal-framed smartphone for the first time: The Galaxy Alpha. The phone will see a Q3 launch, according to a Samsung spokesman.
Samsung’s use of plastic in high-end devices such as the Galaxy S4 had in the past met with much criticism but this is set to change with their latest model.
According to Samsung’s website, the sleek new Galaxy Alpha boasts a frame under 7mm in thickness, and despite the metal frame weighs in at just 114g — comparable to an iPhone 5s.
Under the hood, the Alpha is powered by Samsung’s octa-core 1.8GHz Exynos 5 processor, and runs on an Android 4.4.4 (KitKat), with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory.
The phone boasts a vibrant 4.7-inch HD display, a 12-Megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-Megapixel one for the front.
In addition, the Galaxy Alpha includes extra features such as ‘ultra-power saving’ mode, a fingerprint scanner and ‘private’ mode.
It also comes fully compatible with the latest Samsung Gear Fit, Gear Live and Gear 2 wearables.
The Galaxy Alpha will come in black, white, gold, silver and blue.
