SINGAPORE — The popular social network celebrates its 12th birthday today (Feb 4, Singapore time) in true fashion, by rolling out an aptly-named Friends Day video feature — one that highlights friendships and memories created on Facebook — to millions of its users globally. Founder Mark Zuckerberg himself has joined in the fun by sharing his own personalised video on his page.

Posted at 3.17am this morning, his video has since gotten over 41,000 likes and 1,000 shares as of 8am.

On its birthday, Facebook also announced that the degrees of separation between a pair of Facebook users have decreased to 3.57, down from about 3.74 in 2011.

Latest statistics on their website also show that 1.04 billion daily active users were recorded on average for December 2015; over the past five years, the community has more than doubled in size, said Facebook, a sign that the world has "grown more interconnected".

“We figured that rather than having this birthday that focuses on us, we should make sure that the world focus on what’s important that’s actually happening, which are only stories of how people are connecting around the world and it’s just amazing and it’s inspiring to hear,” said Mr Zuckerberg in an earlier press statement. "And that’s the whole point of Friends Day. We felt like the world was making it too much about us and it’s not about us.”

According to Facebook, most users should see their own Friends Day video at the top of their news feeds over the course of the day. Users will also be able to view their own videos by clicking "watch yours" below a friend's. The initial video generated will be pre-populated with a selection of photos by Facebook, but it can be edited before sharing it with friends on the social media platform.

Facebook has also released special sticker packs labelled "Best Friends" and "Friendship" to commemorate the special occasion.
