Access to SGH from Outram MRT can be improved further

I refer to the report “Elderly, disabled commuters get helping hand at Outram MRT” (Aug 15). More infrastructure should be provided to bring about a greater transformation, as the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is there to stay in Outram and will expand rather than shrink.

I refer to the report “Elderly, disabled commuters get helping hand at Outram MRT” (Aug 15). More infrastructure should be provided to bring about a greater transformation, as the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is there to stay in Outram and will expand rather than shrink.

The train station, which serves visitors to the SGH, is nearby, yet far for some commuters to walk to the hospital. But it is too near to take a taxi, probably more so for those who use public transport.

The SGH should build a travelator system to connect the pedestrian bridge over Outram Road with Bowyer Block and SGH Block 4.

Alternatively, a monorail could be considered, but it would be a massive project, catering for the plans to expand the SGH’s facilities.

The SGH should consider such enhancements because its shuttle services cannot continue forever. The buses and long queues show that it cannot cope with the demand.

It must address the increasing number of commuters who use the overhead bridge and climb the slope to reach Block 4. There should also be adequate maintenance to ensure that the lifts at the bridge as well as the lifts and escalators at the MRT station are always in working order.
