Age shouldn’t be factor in pay package
I refer to the letters “Let people work as long as they are medically fit”, “Laws needed to ban forced retirement because of age” (both March 4) and “Singapore should discard concept of fixed retirement age” (March 2).

Many elderly Singaporeans are fit in mind and body; some of them even wear a few hats at work, so why have a forced or fixed retirement age?
There are employers who offer disadvantageous conditions in terms of medical benefits, annual leave and wage increments and even termination of bonus payment after the employee reaches the retirement age.
This may be done despite the employee being able to do his or her duties as before and performing on a par with younger workers.
As one of the writers highlighted, it does not make sense to pay an employee who takes medical leave continually a higher salary just because he is young.
Employers should compensate a worker based on his ability to fulfil his responsibilities efficiently and not on the age criteria. The authorities should rectify this, as many baby boomers will otherwise be affected.
