We refer to Mr Glen Goh’s letter “Why do parallel-import cars have longer inspection period?” (Oct 9).

There is no difference in the approval process for new car models brought in by parallel importers and authorised dealers.

All new models must go through a series of inspections, known as the homologation process, to ensure that they are safe for use on our roads.

For new models brought into Singapore for the first time, a longer inspection period should be expected, as the Land Transport Authority must verify the detailed specifications of the model.

Since July 1, new Category A models with maximum power output of between 81 and 97kW are subjected to additional tests. Such models will take up to two to four months for approval.

Based on statistics last year, this affects fewer than 15 per cent of type approval applications for Cat A cars.

Models that do not fall into this category and existing models that undergo a facelift will generally take a shorter approval time. We thank Mr Goh for his feedback.
