Are school mergers merely a short-term fix?

I refer to the report “Falling cohort will see 22 secondary schools merged into 11” (March 5).

I refer to the report “Falling cohort will see 22 secondary schools merged into 11” (March 5).

This appears to be a good opportunity for the Ministry of Education (MOE) to further reduce class sizes to optimise learning.

Were the costs of keeping some of these schools open prohibitive?

Also, what happens when enrolment picks up again? And is merging schools and leaving some land vacant a short-term fix that is also unproductive?

I hope the MOE has seriously considered its approach.
