It is hard to believe that Atwell Jansen, who mesmerised music lovers with his violin, is no more.

I feel blessed to have interacted with him when I used to patronise JJ Atlante at Duxton Road, where his band Heritage plays six nights a week.

He was an extraordinary musician known for his dexterity and subtlety in handling the electric violin. His majestic bowing wooed many patrons to the pub. He also played the concert flute, harmonica and kalimba (African thumb piano) with aplomb.

His renditions reflected his moods and the demands of his audience, with whom he established and enjoyed a good rapport. Music lovers will never forget his vigour on stage. He was a unique musician who entertained all class of audiences.

A man of natural warmth, Atwell was hardworking, simple and good-natured. He was never jealous of anyone and celebrated the successes of others.

Someone once asked him, if he could have a beer and a chat with anyone, alive or dead, who it would be and why.

He replied, tongue-in-cheek: “It’d have to be Jesus Christ. Maybe not beer but a glass of wine, and I’d be awestruck, terrified, speechless, ecstatic and incredulous, all at the same time. But even for a great sinner like me, I’d bask in his love, wisdom and enlightenment.”

I have still not come to terms with Atwell’s demise. Every human is mortal, but his music is immortal. There can never be a violinist in Singapore like him. His violin would speak directly to our hearts, and he will remain in our hearts in the form of music.

May his soul rest in peace.
