Be flexible when implementing cashless transit

I agree that a cashless transit is the way forward for our public transport system.

I agree that a cashless transit is the way forward for our public transport system.

As pointed out, however, some of the elderly will have difficulty in this transition (A cashless transit won’t be easy for some elderly and the young, say observers; Aug 11, online).

This could be overcome by authorising outlets within MRT stations to do top-ups via cash for a small charge. Station staff can then direct the elderly to those outlets with an explanation.

For the younger ones, parents must take the initiative to do the top-ups until their children are old enough to do so themselves. There should be no reason for parents to complain, as their children will learn the process early.

A cashless transit must be implemented flexibly during the initial stages, so as to avoid nasty exchanges between MRT personnel and commuters.
