Bike sharing can work with joint efforts

Though there has been a boom in bicycle sharing — first there was the start-up ofo, followed by oBike and then Mobike — not everything has gone smoothly (“Civic-mindedness key to ensuring success of bike sharing”; July 31, online).

Singaporeans have noticed the bicycles being parked where we least expected them. We have seen online videos of youngsters vandalising and mistreating these bikes. In one case, a man hurled an ofo bike from a block of flats.

That these incidents have occurred in Singapore is appalling. The bike-sharing companies could focus on educating the public about how they should take care of and park the bikes.

This can be done through television, radio and newspaper advertisements as well as on social media. The Government can provide more bike parking infrastructure, and schools can teach students etiquette.

If we all work together, there are benefits to be reaped from the bike-sharing schemes. We can reduce congestion on the roads and lead a healthy lifestyle at the same time.
