I refer to the report “E-bike owners must register and install number plates” (Aug 3). This is one way to raise awareness of road safety.

While the spike in the number of people using electric bicycles may help to reduce the number of cars on the road, it can have consequences such as the increased risk of accidents on shared paths.

With number plates, e-bike owners would exercise more caution when they use their bikes, as they would have to bear a certain amount of responsibility should such accidents happen. Pedestrians also have a part to play in paying attention to their surroundings and avoiding using their phones when walking on the pavements. Schools can educate children about road safety and remind them to keep a lookout for vehicles. With such measures in place, I believe Singaporeans would be able to use the roads safely.
