The Thomson-East Coast MRT Line will be a four-car-system, which to the Land Transport Authority will be optimal, based on projected ridership. I agree that we should not overbuild public infrastructure, be it rail or road.

We should also not get caught off guard by undercapacity in our MRT network.

For example, there were no lifts in the North South and East West Line stations when they were built, and there was massive hacking when these were later installed.

To avoid such costly refurbishment again, the authority should plan well ahead and build longer platforms for the Thomson-East Coast stations to cater for any extension of the four-car system in later years.
