Bus drivers should help mothers with prams

It is indeed potentially dangerous to board a bus while carrying an infant and a folded pram simultaneously (“Allow open prams on buses, trains on limited scale”; Nov 9).

It is indeed potentially dangerous to board a bus while carrying an infant and a folded pram simultaneously (“Allow open prams on buses, trains on limited scale”; Nov 9).

One solution is for bus captains to help these ladies fold their pram and carry it to the space reserved for wheelchair users. Bus captains must ensure that mother and infant are properly ensconced in a seat before driving off.

This is an important safety precaution. It is, however, possible only if the bus is not too crowded. Standing passengers should also avoid occupying the designated wheelchair area for the benefit of mothers and infants.

This is similar to the current practice of drivers assisting passengers in a wheelchair. Although it translates into extra duties for the drivers, this is part and parcel of customer service.

The act of helping vulnerable members of our populace would help Singapore to achieve the objective of a gracious society.
