Although Singapore is a little red dot, our former leaders’ insight and confidence won respect and commendations from world leaders, including from the United States and China.

No matter how China and the US affect the world order in terms of their economic, military and cultural influences, Singapore will affirm our foreign policy, with its basis in friendliness and neutrality, and safeguard our interests and sovereignty.

In the last few decades, the US has driven the global economy forward on the basis of free and fair international trade.

China should recognise that it is tied to the global economy and must cooperate with the European Union, the US and the Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) for greater prosperity.

There may be a win-win situation with the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. China could consolidate its economic architecture, and it would benefit the Chinese people’s livelihoods.

China is wise to engage Asean, and we can see the cooperation on infrastructural projects.

Singapore will support the Belt and Road in whatever way it deems fitting, and I expect the initiative to lead to peace and security, as that would benefit China.
