Clamp down on reckless riding on walkways

I refer to the letters “Step up enforcement against illegal e-bikes” (Sept 21) and “Motorised bicycles should be registered with number plates” (Sept 19).

I work in Cecil Street, in the Central Business District, and have encountered more motorbikes, electric bikes and e-scooters being ridden inconsiderately and dangerously on the pedestrian walkway.

These riders include those delivering food or documents to offices and do so to save time and costs on proper, expensive parking. I do not begrudge them their work; it is their reckless and sometimes aggressive attitude that bothers me.

I have been honked at many times while on the footpath. I have asked them why they honked and been told that I was walking too slowly and obstructing their path.

When I tell them it is illegal to ride on the footpath, they ride off without even an apology.

These are daily occurrences around Singapore, and the authorities must enforce stricter rules and clamp down on such practices, rather than wait for a serious accident before taking firm action.
