The survey by Channel NewsAsia and the Institute of Policy Studies found that most of the populace agree that race does not influence success (“Racial ties in S’pore generally healthy, survey shows”; Aug 19).

So what may influence success in our context?

First, socio-economic class and family support have an influence to a certain extent. Those in a higher socio-economic class have more resources to give their children a head start.

A supportive family, with or without resources, can provide the impetus for children to strive for success, knowing that their family is behind them even if they fail.

Being born to a financially disadvantaged family with a lack of emotional support is a double whammy.

A recent Institute of Mental Health survey shows our society’s lack of understanding of mental health problems (“Considerable stigma against mental illness: Study”; Oct 7).

A common perception is that mental illness can be cured if one has the will — that it is all in the mind.

Medical science has shown that a chemical imbalance in the brain as well as one’s family and work environment play a role.

If our society can refrain from viewing those with mental health issues as weak and unable to contribute, it would go a long way towards eliminating the stigma of being a sufferer.
