I read with interest the report “GE may not be held when everyone’s expecting it: PM” (Dec 13).

Following Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s statement at the People’s Action Party’s recent conference and rally that the coming General Election would be a deadly serious fight, there has been speculation over the date of the elections.

Some opposition parties have begun preparations, so as not to be caught unawares if the polls are called unexpectedly early.

Others have taken a calculated risk in waiting for the appropriate time to get ready for the electoral fight.

A credible party is one that is always ready for any election, whether they are held earlier or later. In short, it should have walked the ground and constantly engaged with the people between elections.

Alas, some parties tend to go into hibernation after not getting into Parliament. They emerge on the campaign trail and criticise government policies only when elections are near.

As they are unable to gain a support base over the years, their chances of being accepted or elected by constituents are slim.

Hence, party leaders should make every effort to relate to the people all the time if they are to win their confidence.
