Continue Nathan’s scholarship legacy for deserving students

I express my condolences to the family of the late Mr S R Nathan, who served two terms as our elected President. I always take pride in having studied at his alma mater, Victoria School.

I express my condolences to the family of the late Mr S R Nathan, who served two terms as our elected President. I always take pride in having studied at his alma mater, Victoria School.

My lasting impression of Mr Nathan was his gesture after he stepped down as President, when he inaugurated an award in his name, especially for Institute of Technical Education students, through the S R Nathan Education Upliftment Fund.

In our meritocratic society, he showed his concern for the not-so academically gifted. In his speech at the award ceremony at ITE College West in 2012, he paid tribute to all those who helped him overcome his troubled youth.

He proved he knew the ground when he highlighted that many ITE students may have needed to work part-time to fund their studies.

The way forward is for the Government to carry on and strengthen his legacy through scholarships for all deserving ITE students, such that none of them has to work part-time to fund their studies.
