Customers paying for pets 
via instalments not 
necessarily buying on impulse

I could not believe that United Overseas Bank is ceasing its instalment plans at pet shops to discourage impulse buying of pets. (“UOB ceases interest-free instalment plan at pet stores”; Aug 14)

Banks are commercial institutions where money is saved and interest is earned by willing parties. Customers who choose interest-free instalment plans may not be buying on impulse. Genuine pet lovers may have difficulty paying up front for a pet, while non-pet lovers would not be attracted to buy one even if prices are low.

True pet lovers would be steadfast in their ownership of and relationship with their pets.
