Cycling lane on extended Tanah Merah Coast Road needs a divider

The report “New extended Tanah Merah Coast Road opening Apr 22 will have on-road cycling lane” (March 27, online) would be welcome to avid cyclists. Not all cyclists, however, will obey the rules.

The report “New extended Tanah Merah Coast Road opening Apr 22 will have on-road cycling lane” (March 27, online) would be welcome to avid cyclists. Not all cyclists, however, will obey the rules.

The new lanes will be two metres wide, to allow two cyclists to ride abreast.

Currently, cyclists are advised to ride in a single file on the roads, but how many do so, especially those in groups of more than 10?

A group leader might even ride in one lane to direct cyclists occupying another lane.

To ensure the safety of both cyclists and motorists along Tanah Merah Coast Road, a small divider between the vehicular and cycling lanes should be built and coloured red, instead of only having red markings on the road.

This would ensure that cyclists do not pull out into the motorway and, at the same time, prevent motorists from using the cycling lane to overtake on the left. As the road safety slogan says, stay in your lane.
