Deter supermarket trolley thieves with panel reminders

The writer of the letter “Incidents show need to work on our civic-mindedness” (April 5) hit the nail on the head, especially on the subject of abandoned supermarket trolleys.

This is getting rampant and abusers appear to be more brazen, perhaps due to the lukewarm response by supermarket operators.

Not too long ago, I saw a couple pushing their toddler in a pram while their maid pushed a loaded trolley along New Upper Changi Road.

It is time for supermarket operators to put their foot down before the situation gets out of hand. Perhaps due to business considerations, they prefer not to take the hard approach of reporting customers for the theft of their trolleys.

I would thus suggest a subtle approach: Affix a panel with the exhortation “Please do not take me home” on trolleys (picture). Anyone pushing such a trolley would draw stares from others and may feel uneasy if not ashamed, enough to deter people from misusing the trolleys, I hope.

Until it is retrieved by the supermarket operator, many customers are deprived of the use of every abandoned trolley.

The operators could get their suppliers to bear the cost of affixing such panels in exchange for advertising their products in the corners of the panels. It would be a win-win situation.
