Discard food waste properly to keep rats away from MRT
It is unfortunate that action to manage the current rat infestation was not high on the relevant authorities’ agenda until the media reported about it.

While stray feeding might have contributed to the infestation, proper disposal of food waste is generally more important. I have witnessed a growing number of rats at night around coffee shops in neighbourhoods like Yishun.
Former Member of Parliament Tan Cheng Bock wrote on Facebook about a more serious concern (“Spotlight unfairly thrown on stray feeding: Animal activists”; Dec 23).
When the trains started operating, both the sale and consumption of food were not allowed in the MRT network.
Most passengers assumed that this was to keep MRT trains and stations clean, rather than to prevent rats from getting too close to the stations and making the tunnels their home. Should this happen, ridding them from the tunnels would be challenging.
If what Dr Tan said is true, the authority has not kept to this. The more serious concern over food shops operating close to the stations is that it may affect MRT operations if rats bite the power cables. The Land Transport Authority should review this.
