Do more for recycling at public mass events

It was thoughtful of the organisers to provide items of sustenance, including bottled water, for the National Day Parade (NDP). And it was a right step to flash a reminder on-screen to bin our trash.

It was thoughtful of the organisers to provide items of sustenance, including bottled water, for the National Day Parade (NDP). And it was a right step to flash a reminder on-screen to bin our trash.

I am puzzled, however, as to why there were either no recycling bins or, if any, these were placed away from the main human traffic flows.

I have observed this since I started joining community events — the One Community Walk, Chingay, the SEA Games, NDP rehearsals and previews and National Day observance ceremonies, to name but a few — these past two years.

It is disturbing that while public funds are expended to promote recycling, massive amounts of recyclables generated at national and community events are consigned to the incinerators.

I hope the National Environment Agency can work with the various government agencies to make the culture of “reduce, reuse, recycle” a reality.
