Do we need 3 lights for all traffic lights?

Recently, several pedestrian-actuated traffic lights have sprung up along Hougang Avenue 7 between Upper Serangoon Road and Hougang Avenue 5. These are to facilitate crossing the road, unlike the lights at signalised junctions to direct traffic flow.

Recently, several pedestrian-actuated traffic lights have sprung up along Hougang Avenue 7 between Upper Serangoon Road and Hougang Avenue 5. These are to facilitate crossing the road, unlike the lights at signalised junctions to direct traffic flow.

It crossed my mind that the green light is not required and is a waste of energy. Only the amber and red lights are required to alert motorists to slow down and stop upon activation by pedestrians.

The lights are otherwise on green. Hence, a two-light traffic signalling system in such cases would save energy. The green light can be terminated.

The Land Transport Authority should consider this as an opportunity to innovate and achieve the same outcomes with less. Do we need a three-light system for all our traffic lights?
