I applaud the Government for taking steps to harness greener energy, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 132,500 tonnes each year (“848 more HDB blocks to be installed with solar panels”; Nov 1).

However, one of the root causes for uncontrolled carbon emissions is the lack of public awareness and knowledge.

Earlier this year, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) announced that a new online information portal will be made available in the second half of 2018, to allow consumers to make more informed decisions on their electricity purchase plans (“New online platform for electricity retailers set to jolt energy market”; July 13). This is good because with greater access to relevant information, consumers can become more aware of the negative environmental impact potentially brought about by excessive use of electricity.

EMA can create greater awareness among the public by boosting its publicity outreach and education efforts. First, by using social media to share tips on the ways to fully use the online portal to manage energy use. Second, by doing more to educate students in schools on the consequences of excessive energy usage. The value of education is important when it comes to tackling environmental issues.
