Is EDB footing the bill for Changi’s tech push?

Changi Airport Group and the Economic Development Board (EDB) have signed a memorandum of understanding to harness technology for airport operations (“S$50 million programme launched to turn Changi Airport into ‘living lab’”; Jan 6).

The outcomes envisioned include ensuring there are enough taxis, the use of cleaning robots, applying data analytics and using new security technologies. This raises questions as to whether, and why, the EDB is footing the bill for a profit-making entity.

Why should it be championing rudimentary technical solutions? Our Smart Nation vision should not be translated at the ground level into projects at a low technological level involving an agency such as the EDB.
