Embrace inclusiveness as part of S’pore essence

I refer to the letters “Big difference between freedom of expression and incitement to hatred” (May 7) and “Practical human rights approach exhorts respect for differences” (May 9).

The difference between freedom of expression and incitement to hatred is distinctly in the motive and starting point — that is, whether there is ill intention or not.

If we probe deeper, both of them probably reveal the selfishness and self-glorification of human nature.

As we live in this capitalistic and pluralistic society, we should recognise that everyone is entitled to certain equal rights and the freedom of choice of lifestyle, religion, sexual orientation and speech.

These must be done and managed appropriately, though, in order not to violate law and order.

It is impossible and unnecessary to impose conformity in ideas and choices on others, and we should not have the wrong perception that our views are superior to others.

Hence, whenever we express our opinions publicly, we must exercise care by choosing the right words, to avoid hurting sensitive feelings and inciting emotions among our diverse ethnic groups.

It is important for everyone to do his part to care about the thoughts of others. Doing so can consolidate our national unity.

Most importantly, we should mutually respect each individual’s rights, privacy and freedom of expression.

We should try our best to appreciate and embrace the beauty and importance of diversity, inclusiveness and tolerance as part of our essence. These are virtues for a citizen to have and the right way for taking Singapore forward.
