Employers should be more willing to do 
their own housework

The report “Going around the system to meet demand for maids” (July 24) mentioned that employers are “very impatient”, demanding that domestic workers arrive in a week or 10 days, resulting in issues such as 
illegal recruiting.

The report “Going around the system to meet demand for maids” (July 24) mentioned that employers are “very impatient”, demanding that domestic workers arrive in a week or 10 days, resulting in issues such as 
illegal recruiting.

Has job specialisation reached a stage where one has lost the basic skills of cooking and cleaning up after oneself? Or is it the unwillingness to forgo an effortless lifestyle to look and feel good, even for a short period?

Domestic work is ultimately our responsibility. There are already many automated tools and self-help services in the market. Doing housework ourselves and opting for a simpler life can be a way to deal with the supply shortage.

It is also a good opportunity to learn independence and appreciate the help domestic workers provide.
