Enhance concept of supportive living

Stronger family ties can be fostered if married couples live together with or close to their parents. (“Couples should get more help to live near parents: Khaw”: May 26)

Some elderly folk want independence but, at the same time, would relish living near their loved ones, for easier visiting and close contact. This is possible if they live in the same estate.

What is more important for seniors is that help is close by if needed. Occasionally, we read about old people who live alone and die alone. Unless something is done, such cases are likely to increase.

Living alone is painful. We fear the loneliness of being unattached and the emptiness of not being needed and valued. More can be done to address this concern. Given our ageing population, the concept of supportive living should be enhanced.
