In era of fake news, let’s be sensitive to information sources

In this day and age, when technology is part of daily life, it is inevitable that the issue of fake news has surfaced (Strong, reliable media still as crucial as ever; July 27).

With the mighty “Share” button, information can be transmitted in the blink of an eye.

One example is the “news” that leaving used tissue on plates at hawker centres may result in a fine (In an era of fake news, the truth may not always be out there; June 2, online).

People used messaging applications to pass the news on, hoping to educate their friends and family, only to realise it was a hoax.

But not everyone — those who are not updated regularly — will eventually realise what news is fake.

Going forward, how should fake news be contained? How can readers discern the truth and the lies?

Though the introduction of laws tackling fake news will be an important step next year, Singaporeans should also realise the need to treat what they see or read with caution.

One method is to cross-check against a trustworthy news outlet, government agencies or official pages, which would update information in regard to a certain piece of news.

Singaporeans should be sensitive to the sources of information and whether they should be trusted or not. This is how we can all play a part in preventing the spread of fake news.
