Everyone at home should pitch in with housework

I agree with the points raised in “Employers should be more willing to do their own housework” (July 31).

Singapore could have a generation with no experience of household chores if they depend solely on their maids, without lifting a finger.

When our maid returned recently to her country for three weeks, everyone in the family played a part in housekeeping and other domestic work.

As we have been helping her all along with simple chores such as cooking simple meals, doing the laundry and mopping the floor, we could manage during her short absence. It is imperative that family members, young and old, be accustomed to some housework. Such experience might come in handy when the situation warrants it.

Given that our reliance on foreign maids has been and will be a perennial problem, it is time we look at the whole issue in perspective. I can think of no better way to learn to be independent.
