Festival moving to April to coincide with World Heritage Day

We thank Mrs Sakina Yusuf Kagda for her feedback in the letter “Bad timing to schedule heritage fest for fasting month” (July 14). For the past 11 years, the Singapore HeritageFest (SHF) has been held in July to coincide with Racial Harmony Day, to encourage Singaporeans to celebrate their shared heritage.

For 2015, as announced by the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth during the launch of SHF 2014, we will be moving the festival to April, to coincide with World Heritage Day on April 18. Singaporeans, especially those in schools, can continue to celebrate Racial Harmony Day at our museums through various offerings.

While it is not always possible to plan our programmes around Singapore’s diverse calendar of ethnic and religious festivals, we will ensure the festival continues to feature various offerings that maximise the participation of Singaporeans from all walks of life.

For example, we have various programmes in the evenings this year, including talks and film screenings at the National Museum of Singapore and our 11 festival hubs island-wide, which we hope Mrs Yusuf Kagda and her family will enjoy. We are encouraged by the public’s interest and response towards this year’s SHF. We are heartened that the festival has become a platform for active community collaboration and contribution, resulting in a surge of programme offerings this year.

With next year being Singapore’s 50th anniversary, Singaporeans can look forward to an even more exciting SHF, as we continue to reflect and reconnect as one.
