Fighters should stand trial when they return
The commentary “Making criminals out of returning ‘foreign fighters’ isn’t the answer” (Sept 23) highlights the human side of militants in Syria and Iraq.

The reality is that many of those who end up there were misled. The Arab News has carried articles of former militants and their experiences, such as one on Sunday detailing how a Saudi youth was brainwashed and sent to the Syrian battlefield.
I disagree with the commentary writers, however, that those who left their home countries should not be punished upon their return. They must face the law of their country. Any rehabilitation should be done as they serve their terms. Putting returnees on trial would serve as a deterrent to other aspirants.
