Find more ways to help the homeless

The reports on four homeless individuals (“Sunday Spotlight: More complex than meets the eye, Singapore’s homeless struggle to find support”; Oct 14) sparked a discussion among Facebook users about how these people can get the help they need, and the possible causes of their plight.

The reports on four homeless individuals (“Sunday Spotlight: More complex than meets the eye, Singapore’s homeless struggle to find support”; Oct 14) sparked a discussion among Facebook users about how these people can get the help they need, and the possible causes of their plight.

I think these reports highlight something very important: The Government’s Joint Single Rental Scheme is not workable for elders here… I think people would like to have their own space. The HDB (Housing and Development Board) should look into it… Let’s make some concessions to make some of our fellow Singaporeans’ lives better. MARK LEONG

There’s a need to talk more about the system and how it structurally ignores the disenfranchised and leaves them in their “deserts”. Talk more about what needs to be done, and who needs to do it, not just what is happening. HANNAH YI XI

I’ve worked with a variety of social welfare groups in Singapore for a few years and these people are very hardworking and altruistic, but they cannot save those who don’t want to be saved. And before any of you cast judgement that Singapore is not doing enough, I suggest that you volunteer to work with the disadvantaged. Then you will understand. FRANK YOUNG

How is it more difficult for MND (the Ministry of National Development) to come up with shoebox-size rental flats for transients and the disadvantaged, compared to a much-poorer Singapore in the 1970s when we managed to house 85 per cent of Singaporeans in public housing of various sizes?
