Flats should be for those with real housing needs
I refer to the letter “Unfair that retirees with private property cannot buy HDB flats” (Nov 24). Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats should be reserved for those with real housing needs; that is, those who are unable to afford a private property.

Why let HDB flat owners buy private property but not vice versa? If the former can own multiple properties, it shows that they are wealthy and should not be holding on to the HDB flat.
How many HDB flat owners own private property here? That many new flats would then not need to be built.
But if HDB flat owners are allowed to buy private property following the Minimum Occupation Period, then private property owners should be allowed to buy an HDB flat if they have lived in the private property for a certain period of time.
