We thank Mr Vengadasalam Rengayyan for his letter, “Sputtering S.League due to years of bad management” (Aug 13). The participation by foreign teams in the league has contributed to an improvement in the standard of local football.

Having Albirex Niigata (S) and Brunei DPMM has made the S.League more competitive, which augurs well for improvements to Singapore football, which in turn will go towards the development of better players for the national team.

Foreign teams also generate greater excitement; at times, the local versus foreign rivalry help heighten the intensity of matches.

Foreign teams participating in the S.League must be able to make a difference and are treated on an equal footing with the local clubs.

The league should have foreign teams that can contribute towards making professional football here more exciting and can raise the quality of football in the long run through intense and good competition.

At the same time, the S.League strives to strengthen our local clubs, on and off the field, by sharing best practices and improving club management as well as their overall professionalism.

We are grateful for the continued support from fans and welcome all constructive feedback and recommendations as we work towards the common goal of improving Singaporean football.
