Free entry at SEA Games good for the community

I support the decision to have free entry to half of the 36 sports in the 2015 South-east Asian (SEA) Games here. (“Free tickets, mass events on cards to draw SEA Games crowds”; Jan 29)

This would promote sports in the community and motivate youngsters to emulate the Games participants.

I doubt that many of us devote our weekends now to being active in sports.

This is an opportunity for Singaporeans to know more about different sports, their rules and how they help us keep fit.

Besides, sports can widen our social network and build rapport in our neighbourhood. People who love similar sports could strive for better results together.

Lastly, it is the fun times we enjoy as a family that counts. Through watching the different games, we would exchange opinions on the games and performances.

Few of us have a chance to be SEA Games athletes; even fewer will receive medals.

But when we see our fellow citizens on the podium, singing the national anthem and bringing glory to Singapore, it could be a priceless feeling.
