I refer to the report “PM Lee gets the all-clear after health scare at NDR” (Aug 23).

I believe this is the good news Singaporeans wanted to hear. The only wish I need is good health for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and our leaders, to keep us as united as before.

I was touched and inspired by Mr Lee’s determination to conclude his speech despite taking ill. Good leadership is a key pillar of succession planning, which will ensure stability and peace here.

Singapore is blessed with leaders who care about the country. But we must continue to improve, for our next generation — the “divine discontent” Mr Lee referred to in his National Day Rally speech.

Since Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s time, our prime ministers have addressed Singaporeans at the rally, with a three-hour speech in different languages.

It is the best time to explain to everyone the big challenges we face and the plans ahead, besides reporting past achievements. It is not easy, however, to deliver the speech with full concentration while standing.

I hope the Prime Minister’s Office will review the length of the rally going forward. The Prime Minister could talk about the significance of past achievements at the National Day Parade, and give a recap at the rally using video clips.

To our Prime Minister — you deserve a break after a gruelling schedule of National Day events and your trip to the United States.
