It is important that the Ministry of Manpower, using data it has collected, analyses and identifies which industries are employing large numbers of foreign manpower, and which types of jobs they fill.
By finding out the reasons for their employment, the ministry will be better able to formulate appropriate policies, by working closely with the employers and other government agencies. They can then chart the right direction to help the workforce prepare for the dynamic, challenging working environment of today.
To achieve a strong Singaporean core, employers should also get rid of the prejudiced and unprofessional mindset that foreign talent is superior. Local job seekers deserve a chance when they are of equal calibre and have the qualifications for a position.
The Government should continue to work hand in hand with our employers to work out pragmatic approaches and long-term measures, such as making use of the SkillsFuture initiative and lifelong learning programmes to equip our present and future workforce with high standard and quality education, extensive knowledge, exposure and training in hard and soft skills.
