I am proud that our star, Nathan Hartono, was first runner-up in the Sing! China finals, with or without the controversy over the voting results (“Still a winner”; Oct 10).

I believe his talent will attract overseas recording companies to sign him up and groom him as an upcoming international singing star. He has shown that many of our youngsters who may have the talent must be scouted and groomed to achieve their full potential.

We could launch our own annual Sing! Singapore and invite special guests from overseas to attract our young talents to come forward, in a healthy, fair competition with participants from neighbouring countries.

It could serve as a meaningful activity for our youth to focus on their singing, as opposed to hanging out at fast food restaurants, cybercafes, pubs, and the like.

Those who perform exceptionally well could attract attention from recording companies, which would mean their dream of becoming a singing star could come true one day.
