Have SMS alerts when public pools are closed

I refer to the letters “Relook lightning risk protocol at public swimming pools” (April 22) and “Pool closures: Protocol should not cloud common sense” (April 23), about the regular closure of public swimming pools due to lightning alerts.

I refer to the letters “Relook lightning risk protocol at public swimming pools” (April 22) and “Pool closures: Protocol should not cloud common sense” (April 23), about the regular closure of public swimming pools due to lightning alerts.

When the sky is clear, one would assume it safe to go for a swim. Friday morning was sunny, though, and yet Queenstown Swimming Complex closed its pools because of a lightning alert. Having to call a swimming complex to check if it is open is troublesome and takes up the staff’s time.

Maybe the authority can offer an SMS service, such that when a pool is closed, an SMS is sent to those paying for the service, and another SMS is sent when it is clear. The alternative is to build cover for pools, so we can go for a swim regardless of rain.
