Have stronger redundancy laws to protect employees from the effects of globalisation

If the minuses of a globalised world with free trade and free movement of people are left unchecked, it may indeed lead to discontent among people (“Safeguards against globalisation’s dark side are a necessity”; July 8).

The recent Brexit referendum outcome showed that, in Britain, the working class was the most affected. In Singapore, however, middle-class professionals are also affected by the job competition from globalisation.

In the minds of some business owners, once they find that the company has little use for some employees, it is time for the employee to look for another job, especially if he or she is a professional with a relatively high salary.

Although this is the way of business, we need stronger redundancy laws to protect employees, something I hope our Government can consider, so that companies think twice about making jobs redundant on the pretext of a downturn in business environment.
